Bad Spelling

I saw this restaurant in Camberwell, London and thought of this song from My Fair Lady.

Maltese Experiences

Even though I have had a great time here in Malta it has really made me appreciate my upbringing and life in London. We have so many different cultures and different types of people it’s hard to build prejudices even though they still exist. Here in Malta I’ve heard so many dubious comments I thought I would share some with you.

“I would never date a black man in at home in Switzerland all the boys will think I’m a slut because they have big dicks”

“I don’t like women who are too skinny but then again I don’t like black women’s bodies they are to fat with too much breasts and big bum” (This was a woman by the way)

“Wow you’re so cool, but then again you’re black, all of you can dance and sing that’s why people are racist they’re just jealous”

I love this quote from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie “The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete”

As minorities in a western society we often don’t have the luxury of being seen as individuals, one person speaks for all. I’m sure some of you have had this experience, a shop keeper has wronged you in public but instead of flying off the deep end you held your tongue because you didn’t want to look like the typical angry black woman!

Politics

Politics in the UK is complicated. But this year I am so glad many young people I know got off their arses and went out to vote. It’s so important we as young people have our say because the previous generation has done enough damage thank you very much. The immergence of a hung parliament in the U.K shows just how important it is to exercise your right to vote. I am still in shock that despite an unpopular Prime Minister and government, the Conservatives did not win with a majority. I guess its better the devil you know.

Malta

Here are some pictures of beautiful Malta. I took them all myself. The water is so crystal clear you can see the sea bed even at night.

Facebook part 2

It annoys me when people join groups on facebook but cannot be bothered to click on them to find out what they are about. One of my “friends” on facebook (and I use the term loosely as we are barely acquaintances in real life) recently joined a group called “Why are black girls so loud”. The subsequent conversation when like this:

Me- Do you actually know any black girls?

Her- Yes my best friends are black, so is 70% of my school.

Me- Do you know any loud white girls?, maybe you should join a facebook group about that.

I know this group isn’t a big deal but I am so sick of stereotypes about black women. We simply are not all the same.I just went really off topic. But a good rant makes us all feel better.
